"Unfortunately I have been down with high fever since Sunday and the Doctor has advised rest for the next two days," Gandhi said.

He apologised for cancelling his visit.

"My apologies to the ppl of Puducherry, Tamil Nadu & Kerala for missing this opportunity of being with them on 10th &11th May as planned," he said.

Gandhi said: "Shall keep everyone updated about the rescheduled visits."

Gandhi cancelled his trip at a time when his party said it had received death threats about him in Puducherry.

Security was tightened over his visit to Puducherry.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has ordered that the 45-year-old Gandhi will get more commandos from the Special Protection Group (SPG).

Rahul was scheduled to address an election rally at Puducherry on Tuesday.
