Skipped one rally, suspended! Youth Congress cracks down on over 180 members over INDIA bloc event

New Delhi/IBNS: The Indian Youth Congress has suspended more than 180 of its members for allegedly skipping the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan in the national capital, triggering resentment among several party workers, NDTV reported.

The disciplinary action has drawn criticism from members of the Congress' youth wing, with some questioning the decision to penalise them for missing a single political event.

"We faced FIRs and went to jail for the party. Are we being removed just for missing one event?" Rohit Rajoria, a general secretary of the Youth Congress, was quoted as saying.

Speaking to the broadcaster, Rajoria said he could not attend the INDIA bloc rally because he had to participate in the funeral of his uncle.

He claimed that he had informed the party in advance about his inability to travel to Delhi.

Questioning the disciplinary action, Rajoria also wondered how the Congress expected to return to power under such circumstances, the broadcaster reported.

Members from three states account for majority of suspensions

Among the more than 180 members suspended, the majority reportedly belong to Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and West Bengal.

Madhya Pradesh accounts for the highest number of suspensions at 60, followed by Gujarat with 49 and West Bengal with 26.
