Kolkata, Mar 5 (UNI): Matua matriarch Binapani Devi, popularly known as 'Boroma', passed away on Tuesday evening at the state-run SSKM Hospital in the city.

She was 102.

She had been suffering from prolonged illness.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid a visit to ailing Binapani Devi as she was in a critical state.

The condition of centenarian Matua community leader Binapani Devi was extremely critical throughout the day and she was put on artificial respiratory support.

A senior medic said that Binapani Devi has been suffering from multi-organ failure and put to ventilation on Tuesday morning.

“Boroma has been admitted to the SSKM Hospital on Sunday with chest infection and breathing trouble. She was suffering from pneumonia, an infection in the lungs. She already had pre-existing problems like COPD and mild diabetes," he said.

The 102-year-old Binapani Devi, who was admitted to the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital at Kalyani on Thursday night following chest pain and breathing trouble, was transferred to the city hospital (SSKM) where a 7-member medical board was set up to monitor the health condition of the Matua matriarch.
