Mamata drops 'Honourable' but avoids 'Ex-CM' tag in social media bio even after Suvendu Adhikari takes charge

Kolkata/IBNS: As Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first chief minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Saturday responded not with a statement but with a quiet edit to her social media profiles.

The change, though subtle, came at a moment of major political transition in the state after the BJP ended the TMC’s 15-year rule with a decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Mamata avoids 'ex-CM' tag

Mamata Banerjee updated the descriptions on her X, Instagram and Facebook profiles. The earlier bio identified her simply as “Honourable Chief Minister, West Bengal”.

Banerjee avoided the 'ex-Chief Minister' tag as the revised version now reads: “Founder Chairperson All India Trinamool Congress. Chief Minister of West Bengal (15th, 16th and 17th Vidhan Sabha).”

Until around 11 am on Saturday, her X profile still carried the previous designation.

The update appeared soon after Suvendu Adhikari formally assumed office as chief minister.

The new wording places greater emphasis on her role as founder of the All India Trinamool Congress and highlights her three consecutive terms as chief minister.

BJP ends 15 years of TMC rule

The BJP secured 207 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, delivering one of the most significant electoral shifts in the state’s recent political history.

The result brought an end to Mamata Banerjee’s uninterrupted tenure that began in 2011, when she defeated the Left Front and ended its 34-year rule.

Over the years, Mamata emerged as one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s most vocal critics and a prominent opposition figure on the national stage.

Kolkata Police unfollows Mamata

Another development that generated widespread discussion online involved the official X account of Kolkata Police.

Following the election results, the account reportedly unfollowed Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

The handle is now seen following Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders.

The change triggered strong reactions on social media, with users interpreting it as another sign of the political transition underway in West Bengal.

Mamata refused to quit before govt dissolution

After the election results were announced, Mamata Banerjee did not immediately resign as chief minister.

She stated that constitutional procedures related to the dissolution of the Assembly and the formation of a new government needed to be completed first.

The BJP criticised the decision, accusing the outgoing chief minister of delaying the transfer of power despite the clear mandate in favour of the saffron party.

Reports indicated that Mamata was unwilling to submit her resignation before the Governor formally dissolved the outgoing Assembly.

Abhishek Banerjee alleges electoral irregularities

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee questioned the conduct of the election and alleged large-scale irregularities.

In a post on X, he claimed that nearly 30 lakh genuine voters were removed from the electoral rolls ahead of the polls.

He described the election as “extremely difficult” and accused the Election Commission and several government agencies of acting in a partisan manner.

Abhishek also raised concerns over the handling of electronic voting machines, counting procedures and alleged discrepancies involving control units.

Abhishek Banerjee called for the release of CCTV footage from counting centres and sought transparent counting of VVPAT slips.

He also alleged incidents of intimidation and post-poll violence targeting Trinamool Congress workers and supporters.

Despite the electoral setback, he said the party would continue both political and legal battles under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership and urged workers to stay united during what he described as a challenging period.

Grand swearing-in ceremony

Suvendu Adhikari took oath as chief minister at a large public ceremony held at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the event along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president J P Nadda, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and several chief ministers from BJP-ruled states.

The event marked a historic moment for the BJP, which had never before formed a government in West Bengal.
