Lalu-Nitish pact registers Bihar big win, BJP fails to shine overall
Patna, Aug 25 (IBNS):The tie-up between Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal-United (JD-U) along with Congress worked for the anti-BJP alliance in Bihar as they managed to defeat the BJP and the Modi factor in the state by winning together six out of the 10 Assembly seats that went for bypolls.
The BJP also lost ground in Karnataka and Punjab while in Madhya Pradesh despite winning two of the three seats, one of their seats was wrested by Congress. In Bihar, it has bagged only 4 seats.
Buoyed by the results that went in their favour of the anti-BJP alliance, JD-U leader and former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said the outcome of the bypolls in the state is a clear verdict of people against divisive politics.
"The message is clear, that people of Bihar do not endorse divisive politics. We have to try harder but the verdict of people of Bihar is clear," said Nitish Kumar as the alliance of JD-U-RJD and Congress is set to win at least six of the ten assembly seats that went to polls.
"The result is a victory of the ideals of amity and peace," said Kumar who had parted ways with the BJP earlier over the issue of supporting Narendra Modi as the PM.
"We have to analyze more but not now. The result could have been even better but whatever has come in a small time made us happy," he said.
Lalu Prasad tweeted from Mumbai, "I thank the people of Bihar for making the grand alliance win. Voters across the country have rectified the mistakes made in Lok Sabha elections."
The ten assembly seats that went to polls were Hajipur, Chapra, Mohiuddinagar, Parbatta, Bhagalpur, Rajnagar (SC), Jale, Mohania (SC), Narkatiaganj and Banka.
Of these RJD won in Chapra, Rajnagar and Mohiuddinagaar, Congress in Bhagalpur while JD-U won the Jale and Parbatta seats. The remaining seats were bagged by BJP.
The duo, both former chief ministers of Bihar, had joined hands to take on their common enemy Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. On Aug 11, they had held their first rally together and were seen hugging each other at the event. Both the parties entered into a seat-sharing agreement along with the Congress in which both JD-U and RJD had decided to contest in four seats each leaving two to the Congress in Bihar.
The BJP had won 32 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in the state in this year’s Lok Sabha election. It is contesting the by-election in nine seats leaving only one to its ally Ramvilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (LJP).
Bihar BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain admitted the "result is not as we expected."
"The state BJP takes responsibility," he said.
The by-elections in Bihar are being seen as the semi-finals ahead of the high-voltage state Assembly polls scheduled next year.
Meanwhile, in Punjab the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won the Talwandi Sabo seat while Congress won the Patiala (urban) seat.
In Karnataka, Congress on Monday snatched the Bellary Assembly seat from the BJP with NY Gopalkrishna of the party defeating the BJP rival by over 33,000 votes.
Congress also retained Chikodi–Sadalaga seat while the BJP retained Shikaripura. A total of three seats went to bypolls in Karnataka.
In Madhya Pradesh, where three seats went to bypoll, Congress won one in Bahoriband Assembly, wresting the seat from the ruling BJP.
BJP, however, won two others in Agar and Vijayraghavgarh, wresting the latter from Congress.
