Keeping ‘Viksit Bharat’ at the heart of Independence Day celebrations

As Independence Day celebrations unfolded across the region, venues were filled with a palpable sense of patriotic and nationalistic fervour.

From full dress rehearsals by participants to elaborate functions, the spirit of the occasion was evident. However, a surprising number of attendees were unaware of the central theme of this year’s Independence Day — ‘Viksit Bharat.’

Despite the widespread enthusiasm, it became clear that many residents, office bearers, and activists had little knowledge of the theme, which embodies the Union Government’s vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047, marking 100 years of independence from colonial rule.

The theme, meant to symbolize a future-oriented outlook, was notably absent from the minds of many present.

This lack of awareness extended even to those in positions of authority. Elected members of constitutional bodies, who are expected to be well-versed in such matters, expressed concern over the oversight. Councillor Vikas Krishan Sharma voiced his disappointment, noting that successive governments have failed to effectively communicate the significance of celebrating national days, including Independence Day and Republic Day. He emphasized that the government should have ensured that organizers of these events highlighted the theme appropriately.

Further compounding the issue was the fact that most invitation cards distributed by organizers did not mention the theme. This omission, according to many, diminished the impact of the government’s vision for a ‘Viksit Bharat,’ which aims to galvanize the nation towards a shared goal of development.

Despite this oversight, authorities in various districts, including Malerkotla, Ahmedgarh, and Amargarh, made commendable efforts to ensure the comfort of participants and invitees. Organizers also announced plans to honor freedom fighters, relatives of Kargil martyrs, and outstanding performers in education and sports during the celebrations.

As the nation moves forward, the importance of aligning such significant occasions with the themes that reflect its future aspirations cannot be understated. It remains to be seen whether future events will better integrate and promote the themes that aim to inspire and unify the country.
