India, Russia step up talks to make IL-114, Sukhoi superjet in India

The proposed plans include the turboprop IL-114 and Sukhoi Superjet 100, both of which India sees as suitable for strengthening regional air connectivity.

Focus on regional connectivity

Speaking ahead of the BRICS Summit, Naidu said discussions had been held with the Russian delegation on the memorandum of understanding between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia for aircraft manufacturing in India.

With new airports being developed across the country, the minister said such aircraft could play an important role in connecting regional destinations under India's regional connectivity push.

Talks expanded on aircraft manufacturing

“We have expanded the dialogue on that,” Naidu said, adding that India wants to begin the process of manufacturing the aircraft in the country “as soon as possible”.

The IL-114 is a turboprop aircraft, while the Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a regional jet.

Both are being considered in the context of India's growing demand for aircraft capable of serving regional routes.

Russia eyes bigger role in India's civil aviation

The discussions come alongside Russia's efforts to expand aerospace cooperation with India beyond its traditional defence partnership.

Potential arrangements also involve deliveries of up to 105 regional turboprop aircraft to Indian operators, including Pinnacle Air, Air Kerala and Sleek Aviation.

Russia recently showcased its SJ-100, MC-21 and IL-114-300 aircraft at the Innoprom event in Delhi, highlighting the country's interest in India's expanding regional aviation market.

The proposed cooperation could mark a wider India-Russia push into civil aviation, aircraft manufacturing and regional connectivity.
