India observes International Tiger Day to raise awareness

New Delhi, Jul 29 (IBNS): India joins the world in observing International Tiger Day on July 29, with a variety of programmes to create awareness about tiger conservation and how it can help to save our environment.

International Tiger Day is both an awareness day as a celebration. It was founded at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in 2010. This was done because at that moment wild tigers were too close to extinction.

According to the official International Tiger Day site, tigers may be one of the most admired animals, but they are also vulnerable to extinction. In a little over 100 years,  the world has lost 97% of all wild tigers. Instead of 100,000, as few as 3000 live in the wild today. Last year, it was 3200. A number of tiger species have already been extinct.

In New Delhi, the Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Independent Charge), Anil Madhav Dave flagged off the “Walk for the Tiger”, on Friday.
