I will contest 2024 election, says Uma Bharti
New Delhi, March 25 (UNI) Newly appointed National Vice-President of BJP Uma Bharti on Monday said she will contest elections in 2024 and in the interim "not do anything to trouble her party’’.
Bharti, who had earlier declared she will not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, said she had always maintained that she was not giving up politics.
Speaking to journalists at her residence here, the Union Minister for Sanitation and Drinking Water said after elections she will devote herself to the work of creating awareness about a clean Ganga for 1.5 years by doing padyatra on the banks of the holy river and ``rejuvenate herself’ for another 10 to 15 years in politics'.
The firebrand sanyasin who is credited with bringing BJP to power in Madhya Pradesh in 2003 after dislodging the two-term Digvijaya Singh government, said she will devote herself to campaigning for the party. She has already been to Muzaffarnagar and is now headed to Sonepat.
"I will go to campaign wherever the party sends me,’’ she said.
Asked to rate BJP chances at the hustings, she said, "Being from that party I will say we will win.’’
She declined to comment on senior party leader LK Advani not being given the party ticket in this election, and merely said that "he had not contested on many occasions’’.
Ms Bharti said she had shared jail space with Mr Advani and "had not seen a more disciplined person than him’’.
On the coming together of Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh, Ms Bharti said the relations between their voters had been so bad that it is unlikely they will improve in this election.
"An SP voter in the past has not voted for BSP and just by the coming together of leaders that gap cannot be bridged.’’
"In politics opposition has been converted into malice and that is the situation today,’’ she added.
On former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh contesting elections from Bhopal, she said, ``It is not as if former chief ministers have not been defeated in elections.’’
Asked to comment on Priyanka Vadra going to Ayodhya, she said, "Anyone going to any place of worship is their personal matter’’ but added that on the Ram Mandir issues, Congress will have to play a role.
