Indian PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday visited the 1,000-year-old Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta, a religious site dedicated to  Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma.

While visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Modi shared an aerial view of the temple.

He captioned the image: " The majestic Prambanan Temple!"

He shared a video on X where people could be seen chanting 'Om Namah Shivay' mantra as Modi visited the holy site.

Modi on Tuesday announced that, along with  Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, he would be launching a conservation project for the 1,000-year-old Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta.

Speaking in a joint statement after his meeting with the President, Modi said: " I will have the privilege of joining President Prabowo in Yogyakarta to launch the conservation project for the Prambanan Temple."

He further said: "More than a thousand years old, the Prambanan Temple stands as a timeless symbol of the shared cultural heritage of India and Indonesia."

Hindu link to the temple

As per UNESCO website, built in the 10th century, this is the largest temple compound dedicated to Shiva in Indonesia.

Rising above the centre of the last of these concentric squares are three temples decorated with reliefs illustrating the epic of the Ramayana, dedicated to the three great Hindu divinities (Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma) and three temples dedicated to the animals who serve them.

Prambanan Temple Compounds consist of Prambanan Temple (also called Loro Jonggrang), Sewu Temple, Bubrah Temple and Lumbung Temple.

Prambanan Temple itself is a complex consisting of 240 temples.

All the mentioned temples form the Prambanan Archaeological Park and were built during the heyday of Sailendra’s powerful dynasty in Java in the 8th century AD.
