Delhi minister Atishi to hold emergency meeting to address water crisis in national capital amid heatwave

New Delhi/IBNS: Delhi Water Minister Atishi will hold an emergency meeting to address the water crisis in the national capital amid the prevailing heatwave, media reports said.

Atishi will hold a meeting with Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj and other government officials to grapple with the continuous shortage of water amid the rising demand.

Atishi in the morning inspected the Wazirabad and Yamuna reservoir.

She posted on X, "Inspected Wazirabad Yamuna reservoir. From here water goes to Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla water treatment plants. The level of Yamuna river should be 674 ft. But it is only at 670.3 ft. Due to this there is water shortage in different parts of Delhi.

"Today I will also write a letter to the central government. It is also their responsibility to ensure that Delhi gets its share of water. Haryana has no right to stop Delhi's water."

The call for an emergency meeting came after reports of water shortage emerged over the days.

In some videos, people were seen standing in long queues for water from the water tankers.

The residents of Delhi also had to buy bottled water to cope up with the water shortage.

Atishi has notified that fines will be imposed on people who wash cars with pipes or overflowing water tanks.

"Illegal water connections at construction sites and at commercial establishments will be disconnected," the minister in Arvind Kejriwal's cabinet said.

Atishi informed that the AAP government "issued directions to crackdown on wastage of water and illegal water connections".

"Use of domestic water supply for construction or commercial purposes" will also be fined, Atishi said, who is also the chairman of Delhi Jal Board.
