Bengal Imams Association urges Mamata to extend lockdown, says Eid celebrations can wait

Kolkata/IBNS: At a time when coronavirus cases are increasing in the country, the Bengal Imams' Association, a body of Islamic clerics in the state, on Saturday wrote a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to extend the ongoing lockdown till the end of May, without thinking about the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, which is expected to be observed on May 25.

In the letter to the CM, Imams Association's Chairman Md. Yahiya, wrote that they prioritized saving people's lives instead of celebrating festivals during such an unprecedented situation.

"Festivals can wait, we can celebrate it later. We sacrificed a lot, will do more," Md. Yahiya wrote.

"Even if Central government withdraws the lockdown, I will request you not to lift it from Bengal and also ask the Centre to extend nationwide lockdown to save more lives," Yahiya added in the letter to Mamata Banerjee.

"Please extend the ongoing lockdown at least till May 30, we are with the government," the Islamic body's chief wrote.

Meanwhile, the number of total confirmed Covid-19 cases in the West Bengal has mounted to 1786, including 1243 active cases, 99 deaths and 372 recoveries.
