Guwahati, Mar 7 (IBNS): Security personnel recovered two 303 rifles and other weapons used in rhino poaching in Assam’s Morigaon district.

According to the reports, based on intelligence input, the police and forest department personnel jointly launched an operation at Mayang area near Pobitora wildlife sanctuary in Morigaon district and recovered the arms from a suspected rhino poacher house last night.

Security personnel recovered two 303 rifles, 10 rounds live ammunition and other weapons from the house owned by Akbar Ali.

Akbar Ali, who is involved in several rhino poaching incidents, has managed to flee before the security personnel reached the area.

Police and forest department personnel are engaged in an operation to nab the rhino poacher.

Assam forest department PRO Sailen Pandey said that police and forest department personnel jointly launched the operation nearby the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary, about 30 km from Guwahati.

“During the operation security personnel had recovered two 303 rifles with ammunition from the house. The operation is going on to nab the fled rhino poacher,” Sailen Pandey said.

Pandey further said that the state forest department has taken appropriate measures to curb the rhino poaching incident in the state.

Assam is home to the largest population of greater-one horned rhinos, with more 2600 rhinos.

The Rhino Population Estimation report, 2018 stated that a total number of rhinos in Kaziranga National Park counted 2,413 rhinos.
