'Armed Naxalites eliminated, but dimagi Naxals remain': PM Modi's Diwali message from Bastar

| @indiablooms | Nov 08, 2026, at 02:33 pm

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Diwali with security personnel deployed in anti-Maoist operations in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region on Sunday, describing the occasion as particularly significant following what he called the country's success in its decades-long fight against Naxalism.

However, while highlighting the gains made against armed Maoist groups, Modi cautioned that the ideological threat remained, accusing what he described as "dimagi Naxals" of infiltrating political parties and various organisations to incite people against the Constitution and democracy.

"This Diwali in 2026 is truly special. This is the first Diwali since the nation won its decades-long battle against Naxalism and Maoist terror. This is the first Diwali where every single district in the country is free from Naxalism. This is the first Diwali where crores of our citizens have overcome the fear of Naxalism," the Prime Minister said.

He, however, warned that the challenge was not entirely over.

"While the armed Naxalites have been eliminated, 'dimagi Naxals' have taken control of various organisations. Even today, they continue to incite people against the Constitution and democracy. These ideological Naxalites have infiltrated several political parties and diverse organisations. We must identify them, defeat them and ensure the nation's security," Modi said.

'Dimagi naxals' remark sparks political debate

The Prime Minister's remarks are likely to reignite the political debate surrounding his use of the term "dimagi Naxals", which he had first employed during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort.

Opposition leaders and activists critical of the BJP have repeatedly clashed with the ruling party over the expression, which is used to describe individuals and groups allegedly promoting Maoist ideology without participating in armed insurgency.

The remarks also come amid a political controversy involving the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

Recently, Union Minister Jitendra Singh accused the group and its key members of channeling illegal funds from foreign non-profit organisations and hostile external networks to fuel unrest in India.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Singh alleged that authorities possessed evidence linking the outfit's founder, Abhijeet Dipke, and its strategist, Ashutosh Ranka, to overseas financiers.

The CJP rejected the allegations and challenged the government to produce evidence supporting its claims.

No CRPF soldier killed in action in a year: PM

Highlighting the achievements of security forces, Modi said that, for the first time in 47 years, not a single Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel had been killed in action over the preceding year.

Calling it an extraordinary achievement, the Prime Minister credited the security forces for their courage, dedication and sacrifices.

"That is why I have come to celebrate Diwali with you today, and to express gratitude - on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians - for your sacrifices, your dedication and your spirit of service," he said.

Modi also recalled the deadly Maoist attacks in Dantewada in 2010, when 66 CRPF personnel were killed in one incident and 41 civilians lost their lives in another.

Referring to the period between 2004 and 2013, he said the annual number of security personnel killed in action had exceeded the number of Maoists eliminated.

"Today, not a single CRPF soldier has had to lose their life while on duty. This is a victory for the nation's sound policies, respect and willpower. I repeat, this is a testament to your valour, courage and restraint," he said.

Bastar's transformation after anti-Maoist operations

Bastar, once regarded as a major centre of Maoist activity in Chhattisgarh, has witnessed intensified counter-insurgency operations, large-scale surrenders and a renewed push for development.

The Prime Minister said the progress achieved in the region should be seen not as the end of the journey but as the beginning of a new phase of growth.

Describing the gains as an inspiration for the country, Modi said they would serve as a launchpad for a new journey reflecting the aspirations of generations.

His Diwali visit to Bastar was aimed at honouring security personnel who have served in challenging conditions and recognising their contribution to the country's fight against Left-Wing Extremism.
