Apex Committee review meeting on coastal security held
Kolkata, Apr 5 (IBNS): The 7th Apex-level Committee Review Meeting on Coastal Security for the state of West Bengal was held at INS Netaji Subhas on Friday.
The meeting was co-chaired by Vice Admiral Karambir Singh, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command and the state chief secretary, Shri Malay De. It was attended by all stake holders, senior functionaries of the state machinery, Commander Coast Guard (NE) and the Naval Officer-in-Charge, W. Bengal.
The meeting took stock of coastal security mechanisms in the state and reviewed critical areas and processes, including inter-agency coordination and information sharing.
In addition, various action points of National Committee for Strengthening Maritime and Coastal Security (NCSMCS) towards augmentation of Coastal Security were also reviewed and deliberated.
Expeditious implementation of coastal security schemes, such as coastal mapping, Common Communication Network, distribution of Biometric Identity Cards, monitoring of fishing landing points were some of the issues discussed. Emphasis was laid on effective utilisation of the coastal fishing community in serving as "eyes and ears" for early warning of sea-ward threat.
