Manipur High Court changes 2023 order on inclusion of Meiteis in ST list

Imphal: The Manipur High Court Thursday revised its order from last year regarding the inclusion of Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribes list, which had sparked intense ethnic tensions in the northeastern state, media reports said.

In the detailed order issued today, the court deleted its directive to the state to consider Meiteis for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe list, a move that had upset the Kuki community, NDTV reported.

Referencing a Supreme Court constitution bench order, the Manipur High Court stated in its decision that the process for inclusion and exclusion of tribes in the Scheduled list is outlined by the apex court, it said.

The Supreme Court had emphasised that courts do not have the authority to modify, amend, or alter the ST list, as this responsibility lies with the Central government.

Last year, the direction of the High Court was challenged by the Kuki community in the Supreme Court, prompting the top court to question the ruling.
