‘Even ex-CM can be probed’: Suvendu Adhikari’s big statement on RG Kar case

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday said his immediate predecessor Mamata Banerjee or any other minister could come under the scanner as part of the probe into the alleged mishandling of the RG Kar rape-murder case.

Adhikari made the remarks while suspending three IPS officers, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, in connection with the alleged mishandling of the case and accusations of offering money to the victim’s family.

Addressing a press conference at Nabanna, Adhikari alleged that two police officers had offered money to the victim’s family on behalf of the then state government.

“We have heard from the victim’s mother through the media that two cops had offered money, which amounted to a kind of bribe,” the Chief Minister said, adding, “We will probe the allegations thoroughly.”

“A transparent investigation must be conducted while keeping the officers under suspension,” he added.

Adhikari said phone calls and WhatsApp chats of police officers linked to the case would be examined as the probe progresses.

He further stated that the role of any minister — or even the then Chief Minister, if required — would also come under scrutiny.

“We will ascertain whether the police officers were acting under instructions from any minister or the Chief Minister,” Adhikari said.

The Chief Minister announced that IPS officers Vineet Goyal, Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta would remain suspended pending a probe into their roles in handling the case.

Goyal, currently serving as the Additional Director-General (ADG) of the Special Task Force (STF), was the Kolkata Police Commissioner when the crime took place.

Gupta had served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), while Mukherjee was the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) in August 2024 when the incident occurred.
