IIT Guwahati faculty member allegedly commits suicide

Guwahati: A faculty member of IIT Guwahati allegedly committed suicide and his body was found in one of the residences at IIT Guwahati on Friday evening, police said on Saturday.

The deceased person was identified as Dr Sameer Kamal and he was a faculty of Mathematics department of the IIT Guwahati.

According to police, the body was recovered from inside a room yesterday evening.

A senior police official said that the body has been sent to the hospital for post-mortem.

According to local police, yesterday evening police received information from IIT Guwahati that, a bad smell coming from Faculty quarters D 022 which was locked and later the door lock opened in presence of Magistrate, Officer-in-Charge of North Guwahati police station, In-charge Amingaon outpost and found Dr Sameer Kamal (47 years old), a Mathematics faculty hanging in ceiling fan inside quarter.

On the other hand, in a press statement issued by IIT Guwahati said that, the body of a man was found in one of the residences at IIT Guwahati yesterday evening.

"It has been identified as a faculty of the institute. The institute is trying to establish contact with the family of the deceased. IIT Guwahati expresses deepest condolences to the family at this time of profound grief. We will cooperate with the police investigation and will also commission an internal investigation on this matter," said in the press statement of IIT Guwahati.
