New Delhi/IBNS: Mizoram and Manipur are the first two Northeastern states that have reported the presence of highly infectious Delta variant of coronavirus.

According to to an NDTV report, 20 samples were sent from Manipur to a laboratory in Hyderabad and 18 were found to be of the Delta variant or B.1.617.2.

Mizoram had four samples, which showed the presence of Delta variant in tests conducted in in the National Institute of Biomedical genomics in West Bengal. The samples belonged to Covid-19 patients living in Aizawl district.

Meanwhile, the neighbouring Assam has issued guidelines for a special vaccination drive for cancer, diabetic and chronic illness patients in view of the higher mortality rate and secondary infection like Mucormycosis or Black Fungus being common in people with comorbidities.

The variant which was first found in India is becoming the dominant variant across the globe because of its high transmissibility, World Health Organisation chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said yesterday, the report stated.
