Vijay-Sangeetha divorce case closed as wife withdraws petition
The divorce proceedings between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, came to an end on Friday after she formally withdrew her divorce petition before the family court in Chengalpattu.
Sangeetha attended the hearing through video conferencing and informed the court of her decision to withdraw the petition.
Following her submission, the court formally closed the case.
Petition filed in February
Sangeetha had approached the Chengalpattu family court in February this year, seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay, citing irreconcilable differences.
In her petition, she had also sought permanent alimony and requested permission to continue residing in the couple's matrimonial home in Neelankarai, Chennai.
Multiple adjournments before withdrawal
The case witnessed several adjournments over the past few months.
On June 15, the proceedings were deferred after Sangeetha indicated her intention to withdraw the petition.
She had appeared through video conferencing during that hearing as well, following which the matter was posted for August 7.
Last month, the court again adjourned the proceedings after neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared in person.
On several earlier occasions, both had remained absent, with their lawyers informing the court that they were unable to attend the hearings personally.
Friday's order formally brought the divorce proceedings to a close.
Marriage under public spotlight
Vijay and Sangeetha have been married for nearly 27 years. The couple had an interfaith marriage on August 25, 1999, in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Chennai.
They have two children—a son born in 2000 and a daughter born in 2005.
Speculation about trouble in their marriage first surfaced in 2023 after Sangeetha was absent from several public events involving Vijay.
Although those reports were denied at the time, the rumours resurfaced in 2025 when she skipped major political events organised by the TVK, including the party's second state conference.
Vijay's political rise
The development comes amid Vijay's rise in Tamil Nadu politics. The TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the Assembly elections, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and the AIADMK.
The party went on to form the government with the support of the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, leading to Tamil Nadu's first coalition government in decades.
