New Delhi/UNI: The Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Muhammad Imran, who took over recently, called on External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar here on Friday.

During the meeting the envoy discussed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Bangladesh to attend the centenary celebration of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to be held in Dhaka on March 17, according to a release by Bangladesh High Commission here.

Bangladesh will commence the formal celebration of the centenary, known as Mujib Satoborsha 2020-21, on March 17 marking the birthday of Bangabandhu, who led Bangladesh’s 1971 War of Liberation.

Describing Bangabandhu as a global leader, Dr Jaishankar said that Indians remember him with profound respect. He expressed satisfaction at the excellent bilateral relations existing between the two closest neighbours. India attaches special importance to its relations with Bangladesh, he told the High Commissioner.

Imran conveyed Dhaka’s appreciation for India’s friendly gesture to evacuate several Bangladeshis stranded in China’s Huwai province in the wake of an outbreak of Corona virus there.

``Pleased to receive the new High Commissioner of Bangladesh Muhammad Imran. Appreciated the extraordinary transformation in ties over the last few years. Confident it will rise to even greater heights,' Dr Jaishankar said in a tweet.

The envoy assured the Minister of doing his best to take the bilateral relations to greater heights during his tenure in India.
