Delhi goes into emergency mode! Work from home, vehicle bans as AQI hits ‘severe’
New Delhi/IBNS: Stricter guidelines to curb air pollution in Delhi were enforced on Thursday as the national capital grappled with a “severe” Air Quality Index (AQI), media reports said.
The new measures, including mandatory work-from-home and a ban on entry for certain vehicles, were implemented a day after the Supreme Court criticised the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).
Only emergency workers and daily wage labourers are exempted from the work from home mode.
The court described previous measures as a “total failure” and urged the CAQM to develop a long-term strategy to address Delhi’s annual pollution crisis.
A top court bench, comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, said only sustained long-term action can reduce pollution levels that are affecting residents’ health.
New steps taken by Delhi government from December 18:
“No PUC, No Fuel” policy
Vehicles without a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate are not allowed to refuel at petrol, diesel, or CNG pumps. This ensures that only emission-compliant vehicles remain operational on city roads.
Entry ban on older/out-of-city vehicles
Non-BS-VI compliant vehicles registered outside Delhi are restricted from entering the city. Only BS-VI standard vehicles are allowed to operate within city limits.
50% Work-From-Home mandate
All government and private offices must operate at 50% capacity, with the remaining staff working from home to reduce vehicular emissions. Essential services, such as health, police, and power, are exempt.
Schools and hybrid classes
Schools and colleges are directed to adopt hybrid or online learning modes to protect students, particularly younger children, from hazardous air quality.
Stricter enforcement under GRAP Stage-IV
The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage-IV has been invoked due to “severe” air quality, triggering emergency curbs including vehicle and fuel restrictions, work-from-home directives, and enhanced enforcement actions.
