New Delhi/Kolkata/IBNS: Amid reports of extensive damages caused by Cyclone Bulbul in eastern India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said he has "reviewed" the situation in the wake of cyclone conditions and heavy rain and even spoken to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Prime Minister said he spoke to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee "regarding the situation arising due to Cyclone Bulbul".

"Spoke to WB CM @MamataOfficial regarding the situation arising due to Cyclone Bulbul. Assured all possible assistance from the Centre. I pray for everyone’s safety and well-being," the PM tweeted.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee earlier tweeted urging people not to panic.

"Please do not panic. Kindly remain calm and co-operate with the administration in its rescue and relief efforts. Be alert, take care and stay safe. #WBFightsCycloneBulbul," she posted.

"Schools, colleges and anganwadi centres have been closed and more than 1 lac 20 thousand people have already been rescued from the vulnerable coastal areas," she tweeted.

Coastal West Bengal suffered damages as Cyclone Bulbul made the landfall on Saturday night, reminding people of the haunting memories of 2008 Cyclone Aila.

The storm made landfall near Sagar Islands in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district.

The storm crossed West Bengal coast close to Sundarban Dhanchi forest during 20:30 to 23:30 hours on Saturday with the wind speed of 110-120 kmph gusting upto 135kmph.

Khejuri, Nandgram, Nayachar and Ramnagar in East Midnapore and Kakdweep and Bakkhali in South 24 Parganas districts were badly hit by the storm as trees were uprooted and shops and buildings were damaged in the area, reports said.

Kolkata experienced steady rain accompanied by strong winds in the night.

Two deaths have been reported from West Bengal.

Local train service was badly hit in the South 24 Parganas district of the state.
