Live Updates: Suvendu Adhikari Set To Take Oath As West Bengal’s First BJP Chief Minister
Suvendu Adhikari, who led the Bharatiya Janata Party to register a landslide victory in West Bengal Assembly polls, took oath as the first CM of the saffron brigade in the state on Saturday.
State Governor RN Ravi administered Adhikari's oath at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground in the city, a historic moment that marked a power shift in the state that was ruled by former CM Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress for 15 years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Ministers from other BJP-ruled states, some important members of the Union Cabinet and several top Central BJP leaders attended the grand event in the heart of Kolkata on a day when Bengalis are celebrating the birth anniversary of world poet Rabindranath Tagore.
Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul take oath as ministers
Other ministers who took oath included Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Khudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik, among others, as the BJP formally assumed power in West Bengal for the first time.

Twenty specially arranged Jhalmuri stalls have come up around Brigade Parade Ground for the swearing-in ceremony, symbolically recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi enjoying jhalmuri during his Bengal campaign trail. Organisers have also set up counters serving iconic Bengali sweets including Rasgulla, Sandesh and mishti doi, while folk artistes perform traditional lok nritya and Bengali cultural acts to give the mega political event a distinctly Bengali flavour.

At 97, veteran singer and cultural figure Makhanlal Sarkar — remembered by generations of BJP and Jana Sangh supporters for singing songs dedicated to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and the Bengali nationalist tradition — is present at the historic Brigade Parade Ground ceremony today. Party leaders see the honour as a symbolic tribute linking Bengal’s ideological past with the BJP’s first government in the state. PM Modi held his hands, touched his feet and felicitated him. He lives in Siliguri. He was arrested by Delhi Police once for singing a patriotic song in independent India.
