Partnership between India, US good for future of democracy in the world: Modi in address to US Congress

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the partnership between India and the US augurs well for the future of democracy in the world, and together the two nations can give a better future to the world, and a better world to the future.

In an address to the joint sitting of the US Congress, the Prime Minister also said that while the world has seen many advances in AI – artificial intelligence, "there have been even more momentous developments in another AI – America and India" – referring to the growing close friendship between the two nations.

“A lot has changed since I came here seven summers ago. But a lot has remained the same – like our commitment to deepen the friendship between India and the US,” he said.

The PM also spoke on radicalism and terrorism, saying they still remain a pressing danger for the whole world. “These ideologies keep taking new identities and forms, but their intentions are the same.

“Terrorism is an enemy of humanity and there can be no ifs and buts in dealing with it. We must overcome all such forces sponsoring and exporting terror.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on an Official State Visit to the USA, met President Joe Biden and discussed issues ranging from trade, investment, defence and security on Thursday.

Modi described his interaction with Biden as 'productive'.

He visited the White House on Thursday, where he was accorded a ceremonial welcome by Joseph Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. Thousands of Indian-Americans were also present at the occasion to welcome the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister, thereafter, had productive conversations with President Biden, in restricted and delegation-level formats.

The leaders highlighted the long-standing friendship and growing cooperation between the two countries, which spans areas like trade and investment, defence and security, energy, climate change, and people-to-people ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday addressed the historic joint session of the US Congress where he reiterated that the Indo-Pacific region is a "shard concern" and shared a vision that the region should be "free from domination", a comment that was seen by many as a reference to China. 

Without naming China, he said, "Dark clouds of coercion and confrontation are casting their shadow in the Indo-pacific. The stability of the region has become one of the central concerns of our partnership."

"We share a vision of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, connected by secure seas, defined by international law, free from domination and anchored in ASEAN centrality... A region where all nations small and large, are free and fearless and in their choices, where progress is not suffocated by an impossible burden of debt, where connectivity is not leveraged for strategic purposes..." he said in his address to the joint session of the US Congress.

Remembering his past visits to the US, PM Modi said: "Through the long and widening road that we have travelled, we have made the test of friendship. A lot has changed since I came here 7 summers ago. However, a lot has remained the same, like our commitment to deepen the friendship between India and the US."

He said that in the past few years, there have been many advances in Artificial Intelligence. "At the same time, there has been even more momentous development in other AI, America and India," the Indian PM added.

'No space for discrimination in India': PM Modi's reply to US media question on minorities' rights

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday said there is absolutely no space for religious discrimination during a joint media address with President Joe Biden at The White House.

Asked about the rights of religious minorities by a US reporter, PM Modi said: "Regardless of caste, creed, religion, gender, there's absolutely no space for discrimination."

"There is no democracy in the absence of human rights," he added.

PM Modi was accorded a grand welcome at The White House. President Joe Biden in his address said "India and the US are two great nations, two great friends."

"Indians and Americans are both people who, in a way, turn obstacles into opportunities": Joe Biden in a joint media statement.

"Indian firms are announcing 2 billion dollars in optics fibre in Carolina. We are opening new consulates. Our nations look together on regional nations. We look at problems unleashed by Russia with war on Ukraine. We are building regional connections to the Middle east. We're putting sustainable development on the agenda of G20," Biden said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a 3-day historic state visit to the US, was given a grand welcome at the White House on Thursday, where he is holding bilateral talks with US President Joe Biden.

PM Modi was welcomed with a 19-gun salute and playing of the national anthems at the south lawns of the White House. Showcasing India's soft power at the global stage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Yoga celebration at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday created a Guinness World Record for the participation of people from maximum nationalities.

PM Modi, who is in New York on the first leg of his historic state visit to the US at the invitation of President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, led the event at the UN Headquarters to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga.

A total of 135 nationalities participated in the event Wednesday, breaking the earlier record of 114 nationalities.
