The health vertical of The Young Indians (YI), Kolkata Chapter, The Youth Wing of CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) celebrated World Pride Day by conducting an Open Mic/ Slam Poetry session with members of the LGBTQ community last month.

The event was held on June, 28 at Shisha Banquets, Kolkata.

Organized in association with Prantakatha, an intersectional youth community focused on promoting active citizenship through self-awareness and social work, the session saw members of the community share their experiences, struggles and challenges. They narrated how despite their education and qualifications they struggle to find employment.

As a part of YI’s vision of building an inclusive society, the event was focused on promoting LGBTQIA+ Rights and to erase the stigma surrounding the community. To further contribute towards the initiative Yi is using their member pool to secure employment opportunities for them.

Vaibhav Soni, Chair, Young Indians (YI), Kolkata Chapter said, ‘The aim of YI Kolkata Accessibility Vertical is to do our part to provide equal opportunity and champion the cause of ‘Freedom From Bias’. We believe Accessibility is not just about physical handicaps, but the socio-economic and geo-political handicaps which society creates. Gender, Caste, Religion, and Sexual Orientation are criteria on which people are judged negatively. With events such as these we hope to raise awareness and take small steps to make a larger difference in society’

Young Indians (YI), which was formed in 2002, is an integral part and a strategic partner of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), operating with an objective of creating a platform for young Indians to realize the dream of a developed nation.
