Mentaid’s new multi-facility centre opened in Joka

Kolkata, Feb 28 (IBNS): Mentaid’s new multi-facility centre for the development of the intellectually disabled opened at Joka here on Feb 22.

It was inaugurated by Dr. Shashi Panja, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, Government  of West Bengal, and veteran actor Victor Banerjee, who is also the Goodwill Ambassador for Mentaid.

Cdr. Shrirang Bijur, President, Parivaar NCPO, Debabrata Chattaraj, IAS, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, West Bengal, and Indrajeet Bhattacharya, Councillor, were also present.

Mentaid’s new multi-facility centre houses a School Unit, a Skills Development Unit, Pre-vocational and Vocational Units, and also the Living and Learning Unit for Development of Independent Living Skills under one roof.

The Vocational Training Centre (VTC) employs about eighteen young adults all of whom are being trained for gainful employment. At the VTC, the trainees are creating handmade items like jute bags, coasters, embroidered towels, gift envelopes, spectacle cases and freshly ground spices. 

It also has a catering unit where the young adults are engaged in cooking daily meals in a well-equipped kitchen, except on weekends and holidays, and from where the students and staff are served fresh lunch thalis.
