At the India AI Summit, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) on Wednesday announced a proposed venture under the IndiaAI Mission to build sovereign, scalable, gigawatt-scale NVIDIA-powered AI factory infrastructure, aimed at strengthening India’s position as a global AI powerhouse.

The initiative is designed to serve Indian enterprises, policymakers, industry leaders, global offtakers and analysts seeking production-grade AI capacity anchored in India’s broader digital and industrial transformation. It will combine L&T’s engineering, infrastructure development and execution expertise with advanced AI infrastructure from NVIDIA — including GPUs, CPUs, networking, NVIDIA-accelerated storage platforms from leading providers, the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software stack and validated reference architectures — to enable rapid and secure AI adoption.

The venture plans to deploy AI-ready data centre infrastructure, advanced computing platforms and ecosystem enablers to support large-scale AI workloads across priority sectors. In alignment with the IndiaAI Mission, it will help establish sovereign AI infrastructure, ensuring that critical data, models and AI workloads can be built, trained and deployed within India, while remaining interoperable with global ecosystems.

Described as “sovereign by design”, the infrastructure will cater to domestic demand as well as global hyperscalers, cloud providers and enterprises seeking to deploy large-scale AI capacity from India as a strategic hub.

The proposed gigawatt-scale AI data centre factory will deliver high-density, next-generation AI-ready capacity, enabling customers to scale efficiently and sustainably. The venture aims to expand NVIDIA GPU cluster deployments at L&T’s Chennai data centre up to 30 MW capacity within its 300-acre, gigawatt-scalable campus, and at a new 40 MW data centre in Mumbai currently under execution.

The AI factory model is intended to deliver advanced AI services to global offtakers, hyperscalers and India Inc across sectors including manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, financial services, healthcare and public services — accelerating the shift from pilot projects to full-scale production deployments. It is designed to offer standardised, enterprise-grade AI capabilities with predictable performance, security and time-to-value.

The initiative will also enable L&T and its group companies to deploy live AI agents on a Sovereign Cloud framework, fostering a self-sustaining innovation ecosystem. This includes LTTS’s Lights-Out Factory framework leveraging NVIDIA Omniverse libraries, LTM’s Blueverse, LTFS’s agentic AI deployments and L&T’s internally developed AI agents.

S N Subrahmanyan, Chairman and Managing Director of L&T, said India’s enterprises are ready to transition from AI pilots to production-scale implementation, adding that the investment lays the foundation for secure, scalable and sovereign infrastructure to drive measurable economic impact.

Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA, said AI is driving the largest infrastructure buildout in history and that India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, is positioning itself as a global digital infrastructure hub. He described the partnership with L&T as a foundation for world-class AI infrastructure to power India’s growth.

The venture seeks to enable AI factories at national scale — sovereign by design, optimised for accelerated computing and positioned to meet both domestic and global AI demand — advancing the IndiaAI Mission’s vision of “Making AI in India and Making AI Work for India”.
