Famous Indian painter SH Raza passes away
New Delhi, Jul 23 (IBNS): Sayed Haider Raza, one of India's famous contemporary artists, known for his depiction of mood through colour, passed away in Delhi on Saturday. He was 94 years.
Better known as SH Raza, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 1981, Padma Bhshan in 2007 and Padma Vibhushan in 2013.
In June 2010, one of his innovative work, Saurashtra, fetched Rupees16.42 crore ($3,486,965) at a Christie's auction, according to media reports.
Born in Madhya Pradesh, Raza enrolled at the Nagpur School of Art (1939-43), followed by the J J School of Art in Mumbai (1943-47), before moving to Paris to study (1950-1953).
He travelled across Europe but settled in France for nearly six decades. He returned to India in 2010.
Raza, famous for his Modernist styles, began with landscapes and later moved on to geometric patterns. He explored the 'circle and the dot' in many different ways.
Raza was one of the founders of the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group (PAG).
The much-awarded artist was conferred with the highest French civilian honour, the Commandeur de la Legion d’Honneur (the Legion of Honour) for his achievements.
The artist created the Raza Foundation to award talented young people in the fields of art, poetry, music and dance.
