Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday to discuss the company’s plans to expand operations in India, including the opening of a new office in Bengaluru.

During the meeting, Amodei spoke about the rapid adoption of Anthropic’s artificial intelligence tools, including Claude Code, across India. The company reported that the use of Claude Code in the country has grown fivefold since June.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed Anthropic’s plans to strengthen its presence in India and highlighted the country’s vibrant tech ecosystem and skilled youth, emphasizing their potential in driving human-centric and responsible AI innovation.

A government statement said Amodei praised India’s proactive AI policy and focus on leveraging technology for inclusive growth.

Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI firm behind the Claude chatbot series, recently announced its intention to establish an office in Bengaluru by early 2026, marking its second office in the Asia-Pacific region after Tokyo.

“India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society,” Amodei said earlier in a statement.

He added that India’s approach to responsible AI governance aligns with Anthropic’s mission: “India’s AI ecosystem will play a central role in how AI develops globally and democratically, and we’re looking forward to working with organizations here to ensure AI benefits everyone.”

Anthropic’s India operations will focus on deploying AI for social impact in sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture, and on forming strategic partnerships with Indian enterprises, startups, and non-profits to accelerate responsible AI development.
