New Delhi/UNI: Seven more people have been found infected with the Omicron variant in Maharashtra, taking the case tally to eight in the state while the nationwide tally has reached 12.

While six cases were reported from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal area, one was detected in the Pune district, the state health department said.

Among those whose samples turned positive with the new variant were a 44-year old woman, who had come from Nigeria to Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune, her two daughters, her brother and his two daughters.

Besides, a 47-year old man, who had travelled to Finland last month, was also found to be positive with the new strain.

The woman is a Nigerian citizen of Indian origin and had come to Pimpri-Chinchwad on November 24 along with her daughters (12 and 18 years old), to meet her brother.

The health department said that the Nigerian woman has mild symptoms and the other five have no symptoms at all.

“Out of the six people, three are under 18 years of age and therefore have not taken any vaccine. The three adults have taken both doses of vaccine – 2 have taken Covishield and one had taken Covaxin,” the department added.

The male patient was detected by the state authorities through routine surveillance in Pune. The department said that the patient is in stable condition and has not shown any symptoms so far.

“He had visited Finland from 18th to 25th November 2021. He was tested owing to mild fever on 29th November and was found Covid positive. He has taken both doses of Covishield vaccine and he is completely stable without any symptoms,” according to the health department.

A day ago, a 33-year-old man who had travelled South Africa was found infected with the new variant in Dombivali.

The first two cases of Omicron were reported in Karnataka. On Saturday, the third and the fourth case of the infection were reported from Gujarat's Jamnagar and Maharashtra's Dombivli, respectively.
Earlier today, a 37-year-old returnee from Tanzania was found infected with Omicron in Delhi.
