Manipal Hospital Dhakuria hosts ‘Heart of Innovation Cardiac Summit’ ahead of World Heart Day

The summit featured patients who had undergone various cardiac procedures at the hospital and have since returned to their normal lives. Their experiences formed part of the discussion on recovery and the changing landscape of cardiac care.

Dr Prakash Kumar Hazra, Senior Consultant and Head Of Department of Cardiology, said, "Interventional cardiology has transformed the way we manage complex cardiac conditions, allowing us to diagnose and treat many patients with greater precision and, in several cases, without the need for conventional open-heart surgery.

"From advanced angioplasty and stenting techniques to newer catheter-based interventions, the field is continuously evolving."

The programme brought together Dr Prakash Kumar Hazra, Senior Consultant and Head Of Department of Cardiology, along with Dr Sumanta Chatterjee, Dr Supratip Kundu, Dr Soumya Kanti Dutta, Dr Pradip Bhowmik, Consultant of Interventional Cardiology, and Dr Kaushik Mukherjee, Consultant of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery.

"Cardiac surgery has also undergone a significant transformation, with newer techniques enabling us to perform increasingly complex procedures through minimally invasive approaches in appropriately selected patients.

"Advances in CTVS, including minimally invasive cardiac surgeries and evolving surgical technologies, are helping improve patient recovery and reduce the physical impact of surgery," Dr Kaushik Mukherjee, Consultant – Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, added.

Actor Rajesh Sharma and actor-model Dipanjan Basak also attended the event as special guests.

Actor Rajesh Sharma, shared, "Heart health is something we often tend to take for granted until a warning sign makes us pause. Being part of this summit was a reminder that awareness, timely medical care and listening to our bodies can make a real difference.

"It is encouraging to see platforms like this bringing patients and doctors together to make conversations around heart health more accessible and meaningful."

The summit began with a demonstration on CPR, following a training session on CPR, moderated by Dr Ashok Mishra, Consultant of Emergency Medicine. This was followed by a panel discussion titled “Heart Attack slowly turning to Heart Failure – an epidemic?”, where the cardiac team discussed the progression of heart disease and the need for timely medical intervention.

Actor-model Dipanjan Basak, added, “Heart health is not just a medical concern; it is a part of living a full and active life. The stories shared at the summit were a powerful reminder that timely diagnosis, the right treatment and continued care can help people move forward with confidence. I hope more people take heart health seriously and make regular check-ups and healthy habits a part of their lives.”

An interactive question and answer session was also held to address common misconceptions about heart health, followed by a cardiac quiz in which attendees participated and received appreciation for correct answers.

The summit also highlighted the importance of recognising warning signs of cardiovascular diseases, particularly as conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and physical inactivity can contribute to cardiac complications.

The event concluded with an emphasis on the importance of timely medical attention and continued care after a cardiac event, reinforcing the message that recovery is an ongoing journey and that early intervention can play a crucial role in heart health.
