Tata Power extends Islanding System to Haldia

Kolkata, May 11 (IBNS): Integrated power Company Tata Power, has extended its 'Islanding System' to the city of Haldia as recent grid failures in recent past have created severe consequences.

The objective of this initiative is to maintain a continuous supply of electricity to the loads in Haldia during a grid failure.

Following this implementation, the Tata Power generating units will survive and quick restoration of the grid will be possible by procuring start-up power from the generators.

The Islanding System is the core of reliable power supply to any city which assures an uninterrupted source of power. In case of breakdowns in the grid, the Islanding System automatically isolates itself from the rest of the grid and ensures that generating units continue to function.

For example, during the national grid failure in June 2012, cities across India witnessed power failure whereas Tata Power’s Islanding System ensured that Mumbai had an uninterrupted supply of power.

This system was pioneered by Tata Power and developed in consultation with West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company (WBSETCL) and West Bengal State Load Despatch Center (WBSLDC) and approved by Eastern Regional Power Committee (ERPC). The Islanding System was formally inaugurated by Director (O&M), WBSETCL by putting it online at Chiranjibpur Substation in the esteemed presence of other senior officials such as Chief Engineer- WBSLDC, Chief Engineer (Transmission) amongst others.

Speaking about this initiative, Abhijit Ain Das, Chief, Haldia Station said, “Tata Power is committed to lighting up the lives of its consumers and the Islanding System is another such initiative to ensure customer satisfaction. The system will help us in saving our units during grid disturbance by isolating our units along with a matching load. This will in turn help us to reduce forced outages and help restore the grid after a failure. We are also thankful to WBSETCL and WBSLDC for their support and guidance from time to time to make this project a success."

Ashok Sethi, COO & ED (Operations) added “The objective of undertaking this initiative is to stand committed to uninterrupted power supply to our consumers thus maintaining the legacy of ‘Invisible Goodness’”.

Following the inauguration, the Chief Guest along with other dignitaries from WBSETCL and WBSLDC visited the plant. The team made a plant round and a presentation on Islanding System was also arranged for the guests.
