PC Chandra Group supporting WB colleges to implement rainwater harvesting as part of CSR activity
Kolkata, Aug 23 (IBNS): To raise awareness about water conservation, Kolkata-based business house PC Chandra Group recently launched an initiative called #StopTheDrop as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR).
As part of this initiative, the Group is supporting 20 colleges in West Bengal to implement rainwater harvesting.
India, the world’s second most populous country is running out of water.
According to a recent report from NITI Aayog (a policy think tank of the Union government), 21 Indian cities will run out of groundwater by 2020, affecting around 100 million people.
Groundwater, which has been gradually exhausting over the years, makes up 40 per cent of the country's water supply.
Other water sources, are also depleting fast.
According to the Central Water Commission (under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti), almost two-thirds of India's reservoirs are running below normal water level.
Policy makers fear that if things are allowed to deteriorate further, India is likely to face a series of problems, including drinking water shortage, food insecurity, sanitation issues, and even regional conflicts over ownership of water sources.
#StopTheDrop is not a mere campaign but a movement to fulfill the Group's corporate social responsibility towards water conservation, said Uday Kumar Chandra, Managing Director, P.C. Chandra Jewellers.
He said, "We are in association with 20 colleges from West Bengal where they have started the process of making water harvesting structures inside their college premises, thus recycling the rainwater to reduce the dependence on running water. It is not very difficult and expensive to harvest rainwater or stop the wastage of water in daily life.”
The initiative was inaugurated with a live painting session by 20 well known artists on the theme #StopTheDrop and a talk by veteran actor and wildlife photographer Sabyasachi Chakraborty on how to conserve water in everyday life.
P.C Chandra, which began its journey with the jewellery business, now has interests in chemicals and general plastic industry, rubber plantations, software development, construction and housing, exports and hotels.
