Mahindra Group now water positive

Mumbai, Apr 21 (IBNS): The Mahindra Group achieved Water Positive status during FY 2013-14 with total water consumption of 6.1 cubic billion, and total water savings of 8.4 cubic billion through the offset mechanism.

“This was largely achieved through a Micro Irrigation System (MIS) project implemented in Gujarat during 2013 by Mahindra Group company, EPC Industries Limited,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

The project, known as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project on Micro Irrigation System was implemented in association with the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), under its Programme of Activities on Energy Efficiency.

The goal of this project was to encourage energy efficiency through the installation of an efficient irrigation system such as drip and sprinkler irrigation, compared to the conventional flood method of irrigation.

This resulted in several benefits including savings in water consumption of between 30% and 50%, reduction in labour required by 50%, a decrease in the use of fertilisers by 30-40% and a 12-76% increase in yield.
