India-China border conflict: Maharashtra freezes three Chinese projects

Mumbai/IBNS: Amid the growing anti-China sentiment and call for boycott of Chinese goods in the country, the Maha Vikas Aghadi government has frozen three Chinese projects worth Rs. 5,000 crore, media reports said.

"The decision has been taken in consultation with the Union government. These were signed prior (to the killing of 20 Indian soldiers on the Indo-China border). The ministry of external affairs has advised not to sign any further agreements with Chinese companies," said Industry Minister Subash Desai as quoted by The Times of India.

The step to boycott the three Chinese projects came in the backdrop of the Chinese military's skirmish with the Indian personnel at Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on Jun 15 night.

The clash had left at least 20 Indian soldiers dead.

The Uddhav Thackeray government in the western state had organised "Magnetic Maharashtra 2.0" to reboot the economy following the lockdown.

Though the three Chinese projects have been banned, the government will continue with the rest nine projects which were signed during the "Magnetic Maharashtra 2.0".

In the wake of the border skirmish, the Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council has also called a meeting to reconsider various sponsorship deals.
