New Delhi: The government has extended import duty exemption on Masur dal (lentil) by one year till March 31, 2025 with aim to keep the prices under check, a notification said on Friday.

The current import duty exemption on Masur dal is valid till March 2024.

Food prices have been one of the primary reasons in the past several months for elevated retail inflation. India's consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation inched up to 5.55% in November mainly on account of high food prices.

As per official data, food inflation in November this year was high at 8.70% as against 6.61% in the previous month.

The government has been taking various measures to contain spike in various essential food items such as sugar, rice and wheat. While it has continued ‘restriction’ of sugar exports till further orders, exports of onions has been banned till March 2024.
