Government increases fuel excise duty by Rs. 3 per litre

New Delhi/IBNS: Making the steepest hike in eight years, the Centre on Friday increased fuel excise duty by Rs. 3 per litre, media reports said.

The step has been taken in the wake of the steep fall in the global crude oil prices.

Out of Rs. 3, Rs. 2 per litre has been increased in special excise duty and Re. 1 per litre has been increased in road and infrastructure cess which is collected as an additional excise duty.

Eight years ago, the diesel prices were raised by Rs. 5 per litre.

Though the move came into effect on Saturday, the retail prices of petrol and diesel have not been increased yet.

Hitting out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, the Congress has put up a tweet which reads, "There are some govts that take the burden upon themselves in order to protect the common man & then there are govts like the BJP that use the Indian people to bail themselves out."
