New Delhi/IBNS: The Centre has informed Delhi High Court that the e-commerce platforms have to mention the country of origin of the products sold on their platforms under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011

In an affidavit to the court, the government on Wednesday said “necessary advisory/ direction to all e-commerce entities with a copy to Controller of Legal Metrology of all States/UTs has been issued to ensure the compliance of the provisions of the Act & Rules", according to a Mint report.

The Centre filed the affidavit in response to a petition filed at the High Court seeking directions to the government ensuring the display of country of origin on the products sold on the e-commerce websites.

Petitioner, advocate Amit Shukla, also sought the court's direction to ensure that the e-commerce platforms provide the "Made in India" in selection category "separately and conspicuously", said the report.

The high court has asked all respondents to file their replies and listed the matter for hearing on 2 September, said the Mint report.

Recently, the ministry of commerce and industry through a special purpose vehicle -- government e-marketplace (GeM)- mandate sellers to enter the country of origin while registering products on the platform, the petition said, the report added.
