Coal India to supply 1 lakh MT coal to Tripura tea industry

Agartala/UNI: The state-owned Coal India Ltd has committed to provide at least one lakh metric ton of coal to meet the energy demand of tea industry in Tripura to continue the funtioning of the tea processing units, officials said here today.

The industry officials stated that Tripura is deemed to be a very crucial energy source for the state as both the major industry sectors of the state - tea and brick kiln - require huge quantity of coal to keep their production unit running.

“The state government is seriously working to assist the industrial sector to grow, eyeing its goal of self-reliance. The Coal India is ready to give the support but still there are some procedures to be settled and this major project is under the pipeline,” officials highlighted.

Tripura tea is struggling to compete even with Cachar tea and the industry should set a goal to at least compete with the contemporary tea growing regions in terms of quality, they claimed, adding that as an alternative energy option, government has planned to supply pipeline gas to the processing units.

Due to Covid pandemic and lockdown, the entire industry has been reeling under serious coal crisis.
