Auto sales in India down by 16 percent: SIAM

New Delhi/IBNS: Showing no major sign of recovery,  the automotive industry saw a drop of 16 per cent in sales in the April to November period, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said on Tuesday.

The industry produced a total 18,920,298 vehicles including Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles, Three Wheelers, Two Wheelers and Quadricycle in April-November 2019 as against 21,937,557 in April-November 2018, registering a de-growth (-) 13.75 percent over the same period last year, read the SIAM report.

The sale of Passenger Vehicles declined by (-) 17.98 percent in April-November 2019 over the same period last year. Within the Passenger Vehicles, the sales for Passenger Cars and Vans declined by (-) 25.12 percent and (-) 35.28 percent respectively in April-November 2019 over the same period last year, while the sale of Utility Vehicle increased by 3.83 percent.

The overall Commercial Vehicles segment registered a decline of (-) 22.12 percent in April-November 2019 as compared to the same period last year. Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) declined by (-) 37.32 percent and Light Commercial Vehicles declined by (-) 12.74 percent in April-November 2019 over the same period last year.

Three Wheelers sales declined by (-) 4.97 percent in April-November 2019 over the same period last year. Within the Three Wheelers, Passenger Carrier sales registered a de-growth of (-) 4.46 percent and Goods Carrier declined by (-) 7.34 percent in April-November 2019 over April-November 2018.

Two Wheelers sales registered a de-growth of (-) 15.74 percent in April-November 2019 over April-November 2018. Within the Two Wheelers segment, Scooters, Motorcycles and Mopeds declined by (-) 15.47 percent, (-) 15.29 percent and (-) 25.24 percent respectively in April-November 2019 over April-November 2018.

In April-November 2019, overall automobile exports grew by 3.28 percent where Passenger Vehicles and Two Wheelers exports grew by 5.36 percent and 6.50 percent respectively. However Commercial Vehicles and Three Wheelers registered a de-growth of (-) 40.00 percent and (-) 10.23 percent respectively in April-November 2019 over the same period last year.
