Wrestlers protest: 'Will come out clean from charges of sexual harassment,' says Brij Bhushan

Gonda/UNI: Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Saturday claimed that he will come out clean from the charges of sexual harassment levelled against him by the wrestlers.

Talking to the reporters at his ancestral house, Singh said he has full faith in the judiciary and also expressed faith in the investigating agencies. He claimed that he and his supporters will get justice.

He said the WFI has no role in the inquiry and demands of the wrestlers were changing everyday.

"Resigning from the post means accepting the allegation. My term is about to get completed and I don't want to relinquish the post as a criminal. My post will end automatically once a new body is formed," he said.

Singh said the wrestlers moved to the Supreme Court even before the report of the inquiry committee came out. He questioned why the minor was not brought before the inquiry committee.

He said, "I respected the decision of the government and the committee. I did not get the post of MP by the grace of Vinesh Phogat."

He appealed to the investigating agency to complete its probe and submit its report at the earliest.

He alleged Congress' and big industrialists were behind the entire episode and said that party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi does not even have complete information about the issue.

Earlier, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met the wrestlers protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and accused the government of trying to save Singh.

Gandhi also demanded removal of Singh from the post of WFI chief stating that she feels the latter would use his position to influence the investigation. It may be noted that several wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik resumed their protest on Saturday against Singh accusing him of sexual harassment.

The Delhi Police had registered two FIRs on the basis of complaints of alleged harassment received from women wrestlers on Friday. The two cases were filed at Connaught Place Police Station in New Delhi.

According to a senior police official, the first one pertains to allegations levelled by a minor victim which has been registered under POCSO Act along with relevant IPC sections concerning outraging of modesty and others.

The second FIR has been registered for carrying out a comprehensive investigation into the complaints tendered by other, adult complainants under relevant sections pertaining to outraging of modesty, police said.
