New York: Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, has announced his resignation, effective January 10, 2025, just days before Donald Trump’s inauguration as President, media reports said.

In office since October 15, 2021, Peace has been at the forefront of several important cases, including the fraud indictment against the Adani Group.

According to agency news, in his farewell statement, Peace described his tenure as "the honour of a lifetime," expressing gratitude for the opportunity to lead and praising his colleagues as "some of the most talented prosecutors and staff to be found anywhere in the country."

He reaffirmed the Office's dedication to pursuing justice "fairly and ethically, without bias, fear, or favour."

First Assistant United States Attorney Carolyn Pokorny will assume the role of Acting United States Attorney following Peace’s departure.

Peace’s tenure included high-profile cases such as the November indictment of the Adani Group, accusing the conglomerate and its founder, Gautam Adani, of defrauding US investors by concealing a bribery scheme.

Allegedly, bribes totalling Rs 2,029 crore were paid to Indian state officials to secure solar power contracts between 2020 and 2024.

While the Adani Group dismissed the charges as "baseless," the allegations have intensified scrutiny of the company, adding to prior claims from Hindenburg Research about improper use of offshore tax havens.

Responding to the indictment, Gautam Adani acknowledged the legal challenge, stating that the Group had faced similar situations before and would address the matter appropriately.
