PM Modi likely to inaugurate new Pamban Bridge on Ram Navami

New Delhi/Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the new Pamban rail bridge in Tamil Nadu on April 6, coinciding with Ram Navami, a festival marking the birth of Lord Ram, The Times of India reported.

The bridge will enhance rail connectivity to Rameswaram, one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Hinduism.

A major boost for pilgrimage and tourism

Rameswaram is believed to be the place where Lord Ram built a bridge to Lanka, as described in the Ramayana. The site attracts over 25 lakh pilgrims annually, and the improved infrastructure is expected to further boost religious tourism.

The timing of the inauguration carries strong symbolism, as it aligns with Ram Navami. Additionally, it comes at a time when the DMK government in Tamil Nadu has been at odds with the Centre over language policies and the yet-to-be-announced delimitation exercise.

India’s first vertical sea bridge

The new Pamban bridge is India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge, designed to provide greater convenience for rail passengers while allowing ships to pass underneath.

Officials from Southern Railway have been conducting inspections at the bridge and Rameswaram railway station, with sources indicating that the commercial opening is in its final stages.

The inauguration is expected to take place soon after Modi returns from his Sri Lanka visit on April 4-5.

A modern marvel replacing a historic landmark

The 2-km bridge replaces the century-old Pamban bridge, which was built in 1914 and served as the only rail link between the mainland and Rameswaram.

The old bridge was an engineering and cultural landmark but had to be closed in 2022 due to severe corrosion from saltwater exposure and aging infrastructure.

Unlike its predecessor, the new bridge is designed to handle increased rail traffic, improve durability, and facilitate smoother maritime navigation.

PM Modi had laid the foundation stone in November 2019, with construction commencing three months later.
