Maha Kumbh: Officials gear up for mega 'amrit snan' tomorrow after stampede tragedy

Top officials in Uttar Pradesh are working to ensure strict adherence to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s directive of maintaining a zero-error event with the north Indian city of Prayagraj gearing up for the ‘amrit snan’ (royal bath) during Basant Panchami (a Hindu festival marking the worshipping of Goddess Saraswati) ritual amid the ongoing Maha Kumbh on Monday.

The directive was issued after 30 people died in a stampede during the bathing ceremony on January 29.

The mishap occurred when a large number of devotees were trying to reach the holy meeting point of three rivers called Sangam for bathing, considered a pious ceremony by Hindu devotees.

According to police, a surge in devotees caused a barrier to break, triggering the fatal chaos, reported Hindustan Times.

A massive crowd is expected to reach Prayagraj on Vasant Panchami.

Special arrangements have also been made on pontoon bridges to ensure that devotees do not face any inconvenience while crossing, Indian news agency UNI reported.

Additional police have been deployed at Triveni’s ghats to prevent overcrowding.

The number of barricades has been increased to better manage the crowd.

Senior officials will also be stationed with their teams to monitor the situation closely, UNI reported.

Highlighting the significance of bathing on Basant Panchanmi, the official Facebook page of Maha Kumbh said: "Basant Panchami bath in Mahakumbh is considered very special, according to recognition it is considered an opportunity for virtue and self purity. Bathing in the Holy Mahakumbh on this day gives freedom from all sins and purifies the life of a person."

After Monday's bath, two more special dates will be marked on February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and 26 (Mahashivratri).

Meanwhile, wishing people for taking the holy bath on Basant Panchami, CM Yogi Adityanath posted on X: "Heartiest congratulations to all the devotees who earned the holy benefits by taking the sacred Amrit bath in the divine streams of Maa Ganga, Maa Yamuna and Maa Saraswati on the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami at Mahakumbh-2025, Prayagraj!"
