New Delhi/IBNS: Former Haryana chief minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief Om Prakash Chautala died at the age of 89 on Friday, media reports said.

Chautala died at his Gurgaon residence after suffering a cardiac arrest.

He remained in the CM's post five times in interrupted terms.

The late politician remained CM for three short periods from 1989 to 1991.

Chautala assumed the top post for two consecutive terms from 1999 to 2005.

In 2013, Chautala and his son Ajay Singh Chautala were sentenced to a 10-year jail term in connection with corruption in a teacher recruitment scam.

In 2021, Chautala was released from jail prematurely after the Delhi government granted a six-month remission to all prisoners who served nine-and-a-half out of 10-year sentences.

A year later, the former CM was again sentenced to four-year jail term and was fined Rs. 50 lakh after he was convicted in the disproportionate assets case.

His conviction in the disproportionate assets case made him the oldest prisoner of Delhi's Tihar jail at the age of 87.
