Who is Chris Pappas? Democrat scripts history as first openly gay man elected to US Senate

Washington DC/IBNS: Democrat Chris Pappas on Tuesday scripted history by becoming the first openly gay man elected to the US Senate, as the Democratic Party made significant gains in the November 3 midterm elections.

In a major setback for US President Donald Trump, the Democrats moved ahead of the Republican Party in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, with the results reflecting voter dissatisfaction with the White House's policies over the past two years.

Pappas, 46, defeated Republican John E. Sununu in New Hampshire in the closely watched Senate contest.

Who is Chris Pappas?

Christopher Charles Pappas is an American politician from the Democratic Party who represented New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District in the US House of Representatives.

He will succeed retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, helping the party retain the seat in a closely contested election that could influence the balance of power in the US Senate.

Before entering national politics, Pappas worked in his family's restaurant business, the Puritan Backroom, in Manchester, New Hampshire.

He celebrated his election victory at the family-owned establishment, where he was joined by supporters.

Victory speech: Pappas thanks husband

In his victory speech, Pappas thanked his husband, Vann Bentley, and described the election result as a triumph of "love and truth".

"...it's nice to know that love and truth prevail tonight," Pappas said.

His victory marks a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in American politics, making him the first openly gay man elected to the US Senate.

Pappas added, "Tonight's results are a wake up call for corporate special interests and billionaires who have been rigging the economy for the cowards in Congress who have enabled health care cuts, tariffs, and war.

"And for the incompetent president who can't even be bothered to care how people are being hurt."

Why is Chris Pappas important in American politics?

Pappas' political rise carries significance for several reasons.

Historic representation: His election breaks a major barrier for LGBTQ+ representation in the US Senate, marking a landmark moment for the community.

Electoral popularity: His repeated victories in congressional elections in New Hampshire have demonstrated his ability to attract voters in a politically competitive state.

Senate balance of power: His victory helps Democrats retain a strategically important Senate seat amid a closely fought battle for control of Congress.
