An Indian-origin student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in the US, died after the car she was travelling in plunged off a cliff into the Pacific Ocean along Santa Cruz's iconic West Cliff Drive.
The student, Alli Renee Singh, was 19 years old and was preparing to begin her third year at the university. The incident occurred just days before the start of the new academic session.
Emergency responders were called to the scene at around 12:50 a.m. on August 13 following reports that a car had driven off West Cliff Drive near Steamer Lane.
According to reports, one person managed to escape from the vehicle, while another remained trapped inside.
Four ocean rescue swimmers entered the water and dived to the submerged vehicle. They successfully rescued the trapped occupant, who was later identified by her family as Singh, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Singh was taken to a medical facility for treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.
Her aunt, Monica Singh-Strohmeier, confirmed her death in a Facebook post, describing Singh as a “very smart, beautiful and loving young lady” and requesting privacy for her mother and family during the difficult time.
Singh was the daughter of Ravneet Mahal and Gian Singh.
A spokesperson for the Santa Cruz Police Department told the newspaper that the driver of the vehicle was a woman, while the surviving passenger was a man.
Police have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the crash.
