US: Truck ploughs into youth soccer game in Kansas, killing 6-year-old boy and man
A woman driving a truck ploughed into a youth soccer game at a sports complex in Wichita, Kansas, in the United States, on Saturday, killing a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring 10 others.
The 34-year-old driver, who is from Garden City, Kansas, was taken into custody. However, it was not immediately clear whether the incident at the Stryker Sports Complex was intentional, NBC News reported.
“She has been cooperative up to this point in the investigation,” Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses said at a news conference on Saturday evening, according to the broadcaster.
The two deceased victims were not related to each other.
Moses said the injuries sustained by those affected varied in severity, ranging from minor bruises to extremely serious injuries.
“Those injuries span from minor injuries, like bruises, to extremely severe injuries,” he said.
Wichita Mayor, Kansas Governor Express Condolences
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu expressed grief over the incident, saying she was heartbroken by the reports of the tragedy.
“I’m heartbroken by reports of a tragic incident at Stryker Sports Complex. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved,” she wrote on Facebook.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly also expressed condolences to the victims' families and those affected by the incident.
“My condolences go out to the families of the victims, the survivors, and all those impacted by this event,” she said in a statement.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the truck was deliberately driven into the soccer game.
