United States charges Canadian man in human smuggling racket

Toronto, Apr 27 (IBNS): A Canadian man, Victor Omoruyi, charged in connection with a human smuggling ring, made his first court appearance Wednesday morning in a Grand Forks, North Dakota courthouse, media reports said.

Omoruyi had allegedly told border officials he was going to Minot in North Dakota, United States of America, to visit friends and family, CBCNews reports said.

But he was arrested when the border patrol saw the same vehicle, several hours later, occupied by several people leaving Minot.

Omoruyi was the second person charged in connection with an organization that allegedly transported asylum seekers from the United States into Saskatchewan,

That same night Omoruyi's wife, Michelle Omoruyi was arrested by RCMP, when she was driving in an isolated area with nine West Africans inside.

A large amount of cash, from a house connected to Michelle, was also seized by RCMP.

Michelle had been charged of human smuggling and conspiracy to commit human smuggling under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

The nine West Africans, after been processed by Canada Border Services agents, were released, said the officials.

So far none of the allegations had been proven in court.
